I AM
A SELF-VALIDATION BY MIA SIMONE
Mia Simone
Shower water mixed with muffled tears and black glitter
I am magic if you believe in it and mystery if you don’t
Strong gaze broken by a history of hurt,
But joy still lives here in secret
I am Gloria, Rosalinda, Antonia, Annie.
Mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers and further back.
I am maya, Angela, frida, patti.
Women bound in their own pages and destined for duality.
I am even my father and my brother too.
In all their hidden talents, speaking softly and kindly.
I’m a woman of the world and of nowhere at the same time cuz’ I’m still travelin’ with no destination.
Yet I always end up somewhere.
I never know if I believe in god or not but he seems to believe in me so for that I’m grateful enough.
I am Mia. Simone.
And also Felder, the name passed down to me by Horace, even in its sullen roots.
I am sun and moon, storm and the calm.
Some say like the wind.
I’d hope a gentle breeze but know myself too well.
For many too much
And for the right few just enough.
I am every friendship, lover and laugh shared with a stranger I’ve encountered.
I give thanks to to these moments, even the bad, for they’ve shaped me.
And like clay I continue to allow myself to be shaped.
